Dr Aiden: The Dentaljuce AI Tutor

Understanding AI Accuracy and Hallucinations

Artificial Intelligence systems like Dr Aiden, the Dentaljuce AI Tutor, are powerful tools designed to process large amounts of data and generate human-like text. These “Large Language Model” systems are trained by being fed billions of documents, and they create text based on patterns and information they've learned during their training.

However, AI in its current early iteration, has accuracy problems. Here are a few reasons why Dr Aiden can sometimes provide inaccurate information:

AI is limited to its training data

AI systems generate responses based on the info they’ve been trained on. Much of this comes from the internet.

In the dental field, a majority of the information on the internet is written by non-dentists and non-scientists, and it is often inaccurate, substandard, or not in line with best practice.

This leads to the risk of the AI regurgitating incorrect information or advice that doesn't align with UK standards and guidance.

Any AI-generated information must be verified with trusted, professional sources, especially when it comes to clinical decision-making.

AI can 'hallucinate' information

Sometimes, AI might generate information that seems plausible but is not accurate or real. This phenomenon is called 'hallucination'. It happens when the AI fills in gaps in its knowledge with information it generates based on word patterns it has learned, rather than facts it has come across.

AI has never picked up a drill.

AI lacks practical experience. It doesn't have the touch of a dentist, the real-time sensory feedback, or the nuanced understanding that comes from hands-on practice. So, while it can provide information and general guidance, it falters when it comes to the intricate, practical aspects of operative dentistry.

AI systems do not understand information like humans do

AI can process and recall large amounts of information, but it doesn’t actually understand the information in the way that humans do. AI doesn't have a context or a worldview and can't apply common sense to its answers.

Therefore, while we hope Dr Aiden will be a helpful assistant for learning, discussion, and getting you thinking, any information he provides should be verified using trusted and up-to-date sources, especially when making clinical or legal decisions. AI is a supplement to, not a replacement for, professional judgement and expertise.

Always consider AI-generated responses as suggestions or starting points for further investigation and confirmation.
