Enhanced Verifiable CPD from the
University of Birmingham

Biological Sciences. The Chemical Level of Organization

Welcome to this Biological Sciences module. This module begins by examining elements, and how the structures of atoms determine the characteristics of elements by the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in the atoms. These elements, in turn, form both the inorganic and organic chemical compounds important to life, including for example water, glucose and proteins. The module then builds the framework of life from there.

The Biological Sciences - The Chemical Level of Organization online learning module has clear and concise aims, objectives and anticipated outcomes, listed below. These will appear on the Dentaljuce Enhanced CPD Certificate, along with the time spent, dates, and detailed topics you studied within the module. Certificates can be printed at any time, covering any range of dates. Dentaljuce CPD complies with the UK GDC's requirements for enhanced verifiable continuing professional development.

Your Professional Development Plan (PDP)
Regulatory authorities recommend that CPD/CE is undertaken based on learning needs that you have identified and entered into your PDP. Some authorities may not accept your CPD as verifiable unless it has been identified in the PDP before you undertake it.

Before starting this module, check that the learning outcomes are what you require, and that you have entered the need into your PDP. Here is an example PDP entry for this module.

Improve my knowledge of the biological sciences that underpin dental healthcare. Take the Dentaljuce Biological Sciences - The Chemical Level of Organization module.
  • Describe the fundamental composition of matter
  • Identify the three subatomic particles
  • Identify the four most abundant elements in the body
  • Explain the relationship between an atom’s number of electrons and its relative stability
  • Distinguish between ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and hydrogen bonds
  • Explain how energy is invested, stored, and released via chemical reactions, particularly those reactions that are critical to life
  • Explain the importance of the inorganic compounds that contribute to life, such as water, salts, acids, and bases
  • Compare and contrast the four important classes of organic (carbon-based) compounds—proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids—according to their composition and functional importance to human life
