CBCT
Minimum Training levels
This course is aimed at the practitioner who is considering adding CBCT to their skills list, but has not yet undertaken the formal training requirements. The time spent on this course counts towards Level 1 CBCT training.
PHE (now UKHSA) and FGDP have set minimum training guidelines for people in practices that use CBCT. These guidelines are not part of IRR or IRMER laws, but there is a general expectation among regulators like the GDC or CQC that they should be followed.
Basic training.
Level 1 – basic training. For dentists, dental nurses with a certificate in dental radiography (CDR), dental hygienists and dental therapists who are already adequately trained to take 2D radiographs.
Duration: 12 hours (including up to five hours of regular enhanced CPD in radiography and radiation protection).
Basic training allows (where permitted) one to refer a patient for CBCT and receive a radiological report. It does not allow you to interpret the images yourself, or to take the image. For these, you must proceed to Level 2 training.
Taking CBCT images
Level 2 – additional training in the practical aspects of taking a CBCT image. For the IRMER operator, who can be a dentist, CDR nurse, therapist or hygienist.
Duration: 6 hours initial training, followed by 6 hours of further detailed training about a month later.
Interpreting CBCT images
Level 2 – additional training in justification and interpretation of CBCT images. For dentists who wish to interpret the images for diagnosis and treatment planning / monitoring.
Duration: 6 hours initial training, with a further 6 hours of self or group study.
Continuing education
After CBCT training, you should in the future have refresher training. The GDC recommends at least 5 hours per cycle of enhanced CPD in radiology and radiation protection. At least one hour of this should be specific to dental CBCT.
