Aim:
Enhance dental professionals' understanding of genetic disorders and their impact on oral health, enabling them to provide safe and effective dental care, in line with GDC PfP 1.1.4.
Course Objective:
- Equip dental professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify and manage oral health challenges associated with genetic disorders, ensuring appropriate modifications to dental treatment plans.
Anticipated learning outcomes:
- be able to describe the pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of key genetic disorders, including Down Syndrome, Marfan Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and Sickle-cell Anaemia.
- know how to recognise the oral health implications of these genetic disorders.
- be able to assess the need for modifications to dental treatment in patients with genetic disorders.
- be able to implement strategies for effective patient education and communication about oral hygiene and its importance.
- be able to collaborate with geneticists and other healthcare providers to ensure integrated dental care as part of the overall management plan for patients with genetic disorders.
