Pre-diabetes

Pre-diabetes is a serious and growing public health problem, not just in the UK (where it affects 7 million adults), but worldwide.

It is a very important point in the progression towards type 2 diabetes, offering a window of opportunity for lifestyle changes. Positive changes during this phase can slow, or even prevent, the onset of diabetes.

Without such changes, people with pre-diabetes are at very high risk of developing full-blown diabetes within a decade.

The sedentary nature and long hours of dental practice predispose many of us to pre-diabetes. That is why it is essential we not only consider pre-diabetes in our patients, and help them by encouraging lifestyle changes that will also have dental benefits, but additionally assess and modify our own lifestyle habits.

This course provides an evidence-based overview of pre-diabetes. It will cover the pathophysiology, risk factors, warning signs, prevention strategies, and management protocols, with particular relevance to the dental field.

Up-to-date guidelines on lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy options, and regular health monitoring will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on the bidirectional relationship between periodontal health and pre-diabetes.
