Restoring a single central incisor is perhaps the most difficult aesthetic task that a dentist undertakes. A direct restoration has the advantage that one can see immediately how good the match is against the adjacent tooth. When a laboratory-fabricated restoration (such as a crown or veneer) is used, there is no opportunity to adjust the appearance - if it is not right, one has to choose between a remake or a compromise...
